Leprosy: The White Truth

Often, when reading what we call the 'new testament,' we read of a debilitating disease that forced it's victims to live in caves as outcast until they eventually died, normally from secondary infections that the body could not fight because of the disease. This nasty disease (according to King James) is called leprosy.

Leprosy is a chronic disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis. Named after physician Gerhard Armauer Hansen, this aggressive bacteria primarily becomes a granulomatous disease of the peripheral nerves and mucosa of the upper respiratory tract; skin lesions are the primary external sign. Left untreated, the disease can be progressive, causing permanent damage to the skin, nerves, limbs and eyes. Contrary to folklore, it does not cause body parts to fall off, although they can become numb or diseased as a result of secondary infections; these occur as a result of the body's defences being compromised by the primary disease. Secondary infections, in turn, can result in tissue loss causing fingers and toes to become shortened and deformed, as cartilage is absorbed into the body (Wikipedia Encyclopedia).

Over a period of time, leprosy became known as Hansen's Disease. With modern sorcery (medicine), a person living with Hansen's Disease can survive and not die, but the disease is still highly contagious. Did people of those days really suffer from Hansen's Disease? So what does all of this have to do with anything? You already knew this...right? Did you know that when you read about this disease in what many people call 'the old testament': it was a completely different disease? In comes vitiligo.

Vitiligo is a skin condition in which there is a loss of brown color (pigment) from areas of skin, resulting in irregular white patches that feel like normal skin. Vitiligo appears to occur when immune cells destroy the cells that produce brown pigment (melanocytes). This destruction is thought to be due to an autoimmune problem, but the cause is unknown. Vitiligo may appear at any age. There is an increased rate of the condition in some families. The condition affects about 1 out of every 100 people in the United States (US National Library of Medicine). This is the same disease that turned the evil idol, Michael Jackson, into a man that looked white.
